When the World Shut Down
Where were you when the world shut down?
It’s the newest of the generational, life-altering scenarios that we will remember forever.
Where were you on 9/11?
Where were you when the Challenger exploded?
Where were you when JFK was assassinated?
Where were you when you learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor?
The older you are, the more of these you have experienced, but it causes you to pause and remember your life at that time. Most of us don’t dwell on these events on a daily basis, but when an anniversary occurs, it’s only natural to reflect.
This week is the fourth anniversary of when the world shut down.
This is my visual reminder:
When I look at this picture, the memories are so vivid. Spring was just around the corner and it was the perfect day. It was the morning after an announced shutdown, but none of us really knew what that meant.
Just before masks, social distancing and cancelled events, we were preparing for a race and had been taking advantage of the beautiful weather and views for our training runs. On this familiar path, I was so confident in my stride. But as thoughts turned to worry on what would happen next, I let the worship music fill my ears and prayed that God would help me rely on Him to guide each step of this new, unknown path.
It reminds me a bit of when the Israelites escaped Egypt. God made a way when he split the Red Sea and provided a path forward to freedom. The people were thankful and praised God.
And then three days later…
“The people grumbled to Moses, ‘What are we going to drink?’” - Exodus 15:24 CSB
Wilderness moment: For a few brief moments four years ago, there seemed to be a sense of unity as we learned about and navigated COVID-19 together. But that wouldn’t last. The path forward into the wilderness was new, unfamiliar and at times, a harrowing journey.
Manna in the Desert: God never left the Israelites and He didn’t disappear four years ago, either. He’s been with us and is still with us today. I’ve never doubted that.
